The Roman aqueduct of Nikopolis was constructed after the foundation of the city by Octavian (Augustus) (1st century BC - 1st century AD). It consisted of a pipeline 50 km long that carried water from the sources of the River Louros to the two wells of the Nymphaion of Nikopolis.
The pipeline was built using three techniques: the quarrying of a ditch with a vaulted roof and ventilation shafts; the opening of a tunnel in the area of Kokkinopilos; and the construction of bridges to carry a steady flow of water over natural barriers. The aqueduct bridge, which underwent stabilisation and conservation work in 1978-1980, stands at Aghios Georgios near Preveza, close to the sources of the Louros.
