The Ionian Route is a smart digital services initiative for users of the new cycle path in the Regional Unit of Preveza. Its aim is to enrich the cycling experience, address practical issues along the route and, ultimately, increase bicycle use and strengthen green micromobility in the area.
The web portal brings together all of the project’s digital services in a modern, dynamic website that also serves as an information hub for the exhibition space created as part of the initiative.
The interactive route map
The cycle path is mapped digitally on a Google Maps base layer. Along the route, points of interest are marked — rest stops, activity spots and areas of special biodiversity — which visitors can select for more information, combining text, photos and multimedia content.
With location services enabled, cyclists see their position on the route in real time, for safe and comfortable navigation.
Suggested routes
Visitors can choose among suggested routes, each with information on distance and difficulty level. Routes are grouped thematically — Nature, Culture and more — according to the attractions the cyclist passes through.
Points of interest & content
Attractions and destinations are also recorded as standalone entries, categorised (archaeological sites, castles, monuments, monasteries, natural landscapes, rivers and activities). Content is organised in short sections so it can be read during a rest stop, covering the history of the area, the natural environment and topics related to cycling and micromobility. Related content is suggested on each view for easier navigation.
Local weather data
Given the importance of weather conditions for comfort and safety, the platform presents local meteorological data — temperature, wind intensity, rainfall intensity and probability — drawing on the area’s distinctive microclimate. A cycling conditions index is also updated with three levels (good, moderate, difficult conditions).
Open data & events
Through an appropriate interface, the portal provides open data on points of interest and measurements, based on modern, widely adopted methods. An activities calendar keeps visitors informed about events and happenings in the area.
Design, accessibility & languages
The portal was designed with a modern, clean look and a mobile-first approach, so it adapts to every device (phone, tablet, computer). It is multilingual (Greek / English) and developed in line with international accessibility standards (W3C & WCAG 2.0 AA), so it can accompany every cyclist — before and during the ride.
